Memories from the UW-River Falls Football Office:

Coach Farley hired me in 1977 basically “off the street” as I had never attended college and had been a stay at home mom. We shared a very small office in Karges.  My typewriter was at the end of a long table against the window with Coach Farley’s desk across from me.  We actually shared the office with several of the Football Coaches, also!!  I quickly learned “when to speak” and “when to be quiet”!

One of the first things Coach Farley taught me was to “make ONE copy first and check it for mistakes” before making 100 copies.  A lesson I never forgot.  He taught me to work hard, but  he ALWAYS said “THANK YOU” at the end of the day.

Coach Farley was a very generous man and when my husband lost his job and we had 5 children to feed, Coach hired him to cut brush and trees at the Farley Farm.  Coach also bought us a new refrigerator when ours broke down and noted it as a “Camp Expense”.  Reason:  We had to store the hot dogs that Rae Farley and sons sold at Football Camp each night!  I also remember one day he left and came back with a truck filled with microwaves -one for Stump and Bev and one for Vern Pottinger and a couple more (also Camp Expenses!!)

Eventually we moved the office to the basement of South Hall.  It became our Football Complex, with offices for myself, Coach Farley, and the Offense and Defense Coaches.  I remember on day coming into my office and finding a note on my desk “I am under my desk”  There is a BAT in Here!!”  Coach was in his office with the door closed.  I also remember coming to work one day and finding Coach on the floor of his office -in the dark-in severe pain from a kidney stone.  Luckily Rae took him to the hospital.

I also remember one of his recruiting “tools”.  He had pink stationary printed with a rose on the side. We used this for our “Rose to the Mother” recruiting letter.  Coach was trying to appeal to the mothers of his recruits!!

The “Mike Farley Kicker’s Camp” became nationally known.  Each spring we would send Kicker’s Camp newspapers to all coaches in every state.  We had to label, sort, and bundle all of these papers so that we could get the “bulk rate”.  We had to recruit many student volunteers to help!  These papers brought campers from all states, including Hawaii!  The UW-River Falls Football Camps were very successful bringing hundreds of high school football players and coaches to the UW-River Falls campus.

Coach Farley and his family became great friends.  After he and Rae moved to AZ, I would visit them and they would graciously offer lunch and conversation about our days in the Football Office.

I am forever grateful for the opportunity that Coach Farley gave me – one that lasted 31 years as the UW-River Falls Football Secretary.

Sincerely
