Falcons 14 . Warhawks 9
38 years ago, the UW-River Falls football program shocked the WSUC when it defeated a nationally ranked and undefeated UW-Whitewater team. The Falcon program under Head Coach Mike Farley was only in it’s second year of rebuilding. The season prior, the team went 1-9. No one gave the Falcons much of a chance in the game. And in seasons past, the Falcon team wouldn’t have believed that they could achieve a win against such a strong opponent… until a bitter cold day in Novermber of 1971. When the Falcons prevailed 14-9, everyone took notice that UWRF had finally arrived — including their own coaches, players and fans.

The weather was bitterly cold, the field frozen and the windchill brutal throughout the game. With just under a minute to play, Falcon QB John Page delivered a perfect strike to wide out Daryl Herrick. On the following play, the two would team up again for the touchdown that won the game 14-9 with just 27 seconds remaining. Everyone there remembers “the Catch” that Herrick made for the score… what they miss is that this play — “the Play” — a 4th down prayer and sandwiched hit, resulted in a gash to Herrick’s cheek that cut to the bone. Herrick held on to the pass giving the Falcons the opportunity for the historic win. This catch was perhaps, the most crucial play in the history of Falcon football under Head Coach Mike Farley.”
