What a great site! Well done and Bravo! While many players, coaches, fans, and referees may have been a bit intimidated by my father, the things that always stand out in my mind about him are:
1) his relentless pursuit of excellence
2) his willingness to do whatever it takes to increase the chance of winning or success; he was innovative -conservative & opinionated, yes- but running the wishbone, quick-kicking on 3rd down, starting a kicking camp, raising money for weight rooms or libraries, etc – those weren’t his passion, they were just ideas that he was willing to accept and act on to offer a better chance of success.
3) his ability to motivate people and himself. Driving by Karges Center late at night, there would be one light on in the athletic offices…his. He pushed himself. He “encouraged” students, players, sons, and wife to be the best they could be. He was very persuasive. And if his logic didn’t get you, the tone of his voice did.
4) his overwhelming ability to be humble, self-deprecating, and focusing on the team. The “team” (classroom students, footballers, or family) for him, “really does come first”. His ability to admit and expose his own weaknesses and mistakes for all to learn from was decidedly useful, and I must admit, uncommon.
Thanks dad (& mom, too!). You made a real difference in my life and the life of “teammates” in River Falls, UWRF, and on the farm.
Lots of love, David
What I remember most about coach Farley was how every game was handled the same way he approached each play, one play at a time and really didn’t matter who or what they did, it mattered how we handled it and gave our best effort each and every play all the time, except……….. the week of the LaCrosse games. I loved his intensity that he had, starting on the Monday before the LaCrosse game and how he talked about how their “band would come marching from blocks away and how they thought they were a big ten team in the “WSUC” and the look of intesity on his face. We as players were ready to go right then. As the week went on the intensity grew and as the game became closer as a young player I started to get it. The best wins were against LaCrosse and boy did coach have them figuired out!!!
No better pre-game talk than against LAX. Flag wavers, 150 piece band, field tipping so that we could run downhill… I think it was the David vs. Goliath match-up that most invigorated him. Can he out coach; can we out play a bigger stronger opponent? Most often, we did. Thanks, Leroy!
